Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists

Since I am the Chairman of the Membership Committee, I'd be a bit remiss not to link to the newly inaugurated home page of this prestigious organization. The new website isn't the most exciting in the world, but it is a major step forward for the SCA. You can view the pro/con debates (including the one on Fast Tracking in which I really trounced the competition) and literature reviews from the SCA Newsletter. Most of these are not in .PDF format (considered de rigeur for the internet nowadays) but a few are and can be downloaded.

I think major things are going to happen at this site over the next year, so stop by every once and a while. AND DON'T FORGET TO JOIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! (or you can't hang around my site). This organization is Cardiac Anesthesia and the Annual Meetings are to die for. Don't miss them (I'll be lurking around the hallways).

American Society of Anesthesiologists

The ASA website is getting better and better. You should be able to find just about anything you were going to call or write about on-line. Of greatest interest to practitioners is the "Professional Information" section which has all of the Guidelines and Practice Parameter statements.

Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation

Despite its reputation for being a techy nerdy kind of organization (hey these people all still have slide rulers in their shirt pockets), there is really good stuff here!!!!! And alot of this stuff is really important for board exams (both written and oral). Where else can you find out how to completely take apart and put together an anesthesia machine with a single screwdriver in case you are stranded on a desert island?? They have an archive of their newsletters (alas, no PDF) and a video library that has long videos on airways, machines, etc. These use the streaming video from Real Player which is a bit grainy and on slow connections out of synch but the audio is usually great. You can watch these with a date on Friday nights and save a few bucks!

American Heart Association

Obviously, a very important and influential organization. I recommend you start at the "Sitemap" page. There is so much information here you'll want to see how the site is organized. The site is for professionals and the lay public so some areas will not be very interesting for you. Based on your lofty status as an anesthesia resident, I'm sure you'll want to head straight for the "Science and Professionals" page, which has links to the oft-quoted statistics for various cardiac surgical procedures. From here you can download the brand new "1999 Heart and Stroke Statistical Update" (which actually has stats up through 1996 for cardiac surgery, but they are among the latest available anywhere). This is a very comprehensive 32 page document full of information. It's great for presentations! You can read it online or download the .PDF file for saving and printing.

In the spirit of "linking", they maintain a fairly nice collection of cardiovascular links (but not as good as this site!).

A fabulous freebie is now available: You can download a FREE 34 slide powerpoint presentation on "Preoperative Evaluation of the Cardiac Patient for Noncardiac Surgery" which you can use for a lecture! You no longer have to invite the bigshots to give a lecture! Be one yourself! The one problem is that the guidelines are getting a bit old (published in 1996 and based on earlier information). So beware that as expected things keep changing (maybe that's why they are giving it away for free).
